Father Minsart, a religious of the Order of St. Bernard, who was appointed pastor of St. Loup Church in 1813, was deeply troubled by the plight of young girls in his parish. With no resources or education, deep poverty forced them into the most menial of tasks and even prostitution. In 1819, he asked two young women to open a sewing workshop so that skills and basic education could be offered. With these humble beginnings on November 11, Josephine Sana and Elizabeth Berger began the educational efforts of what eventually became the mission of the Sisters of St. Mary.

Other young women soon came to join them, and, by 1834, the women were recognized as a religious congregation, approved by Bishop Barrett of Namur. On September 21, 1834, sixteen sisters received the habit. Among this group was Sister Claire of Jesus, who would be elected superior shortly before Father Minsart’s death in 1837. For the next thirty-six years, she led the community, devoting herself to forming the religious spirit of the sisters.

The sisters were excellent teachers, believing in providing spiritual development and educational opportunities to children, especially the poor. The sisters established schools and academies in Belgium, and, in 1863, Mother Claire sent the first missionaries of the congregation to the United States of America. The Sisters came to Texas in 1873, continuing the venture into unknown places.

Today the sisters are still educators and passionate supporters of non-violence, promoting the pursuit of peace and continuing their work in education, health care, prison ministries, immigration, and adult formation. The sisters maintain missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Cameroon, Tanzania, Brazil and the Dominican Republic.

¡Felicitaciones!

I was to “know, love, and serve God, and be with him for all eternity.” I didn’t understand much about the loving and serving bit. Today’s readings certainly set me straight.

God didn’t tell Jonah to go pray and save your soul. He sent him to announce his saving word to people who didn’t much want to hear it. At least Jonah didn’t think they did, and anyhow he didn’t much want to save them. He was amazed at their response.

The Gospel gives us Mark’s account of the call of the first apostles. Jesus does say, “Come after me,” but he immediately adds, “I will make you fishers of men.” The one who follows Christ is rarely allowed to bask with contentment in his presence. The follower of Christ is sent to share in the mission of Christ, to bring him to others. How does that call come to you this week?

Besides responding to our own call, we might pray especially for those who try to spread the Good News in dangerous and difficult situations.

22 de enero, 2012
III Domingo Ordinario

January 15, 2012
Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

1 Samuel 3:3-19
Psalm 40: 2-10
1 Corinthians 6:1320
John 1: 35-42

It’s easy to see that today’s readings are about call. The child Samuel needs the help of Eli the priest to recognize that it is God who calls him, but the “two disciples of John” are directly questioned by Jesus: “What are you looking for?” Their response is itself a question: “Where are you staying?” Drawn by Jesus into discipleship, they seek more than a passing encounter: “Where are you staying?”
Samuel’s life is changed, as will be the lives of the people he is called to lead. The two disciples immediately invite others to share their call. Simon’s name will be changed and so will his life.
We, or at least I, tend to think that a call is a once-in-a-lifetime event, but response is ongoing, and expressed in a variety of ways. Peter would know great weakness as he denied knowing Christ, but repentance was simply a renewed response to his call.
Our call in baptism was not very dramatic, at least if we were baptized as infants, but God invites us in many ways as our lives develop. If you look back on the past week, you will probably recognize that God renewed your call, perhaps through the person whose loneliness you recognized, or the need mentioned in your parish bulletin.
We might focus our prayer this week on Jesus’ question: “What are you looking for?” Perhaps we might echo it with another question: “What will be changed when you find it?” God’s call is on-going. We pray for the grace to hear it and to respond.

15 de enero, 2012
II Domingo Ordinario

January 8, 2012
Solemnity of the Epiphany

Isaiah 6:1-6
Psalm 72: 1-13
Ephesians 3: 2-6
Matthew 2:1-12

Have you ever followed a star, a light that seemed to take you beyond your plans for yourself beyond your comfort zone? Today’s Gospel tells us that that is what Wise Men (and women) do. The Magi didn’t send their gifts by Fed Ex; they went to encounter the source of life. That encounter changed everything. The Gospel tells us that “they went back by another way” to what they had known before.
Each of us has an encounter with the Lord as we share in today’s Liturgy. It might be helpful to ask ourselves how that affects our way of “going back,” of seeing the world around us. The Child of today’s Gospel does not separate himself from the world’s violence and pain. He looks upon it with the infinite love and self-giving that the Father sent him to witness.
Isn’t our vocation a participation in his? We love the manger scene, the gifts and songs of angels, but the Holy Family had to move on from there. Aren’t we called to witness to God’s love, to be channels of his grace, even in a world where injustice flourishes and violence causes some to live in constant fear? We might be tempted to think: “Thank God my world is safe!” But we are one with the nations troubled by war and the neighborhoods torn by violence.

What grace shall we ask?

What do you think the Wise Men asked as they left the Child and returned to what they had known?

We might try today to enter into their prayer.

January 1, 2012

Numbers 6: 22-27
Galatians 4: 4-7
Psalm 67: 2-3,5,6,8
Luke 2: 16-21

Happy New Year!

Today’s reading from the Book of Numbers is a beautiful blessing for the year ahead, but before we charge into the new year, it might be good to look at the one just past. Do you recognize ways in which the Lord blessed and kept you during 2011? You’ve been blessed with another year of life. How is the world a better place because of that? The Lord has let the light of his face shine upon you; if not you wouldn’t be bothered with reading this reflection.

Has the Lord brought you peace?

How well do you know the story of Moses?

True he was threatened with death as an infant, but he was saved by the princess and had a privileged childhood and youth. He made a remarkable choice when he took the part of the Israelite slaves, but it cost him his comfort and security. (Ex.2) The poet T.S. Eliot speaks of such a revelation as “costing no less than everything.”

What Moses received in return was an intimate relationship with God. He was called to lead God’s people, which was a pretty thankless task, as the rest of the Exodus story tells us. His reward, as we read in Ex 33, is God’s promise to be his intimate friend. He is not to see God’s glory, but only to “see his back,” that is to be deeply aware of God as they work together for God’s people.

That is what the Gospel is about too. As the Infant Jesus is circumcised, he is given the name that means “God saves!” As you look towards the year ahead, give thanks for the privilege of knowing the Lord, and sharing in his work of bringing salvation to the world.

December 25, 2011
Christmas Day

Isaiah 9: 1-6
Titus 2: 1-14
Luke 2: 1-14

Some people say that Christmas Day is a letdown! The gifts have been opened; we’ve heard the music too often. So what happens now? Sales clerks tell us that the day after Christmas is really hard, with many people bringing back gifts they didn’t want, trying to exchange them for something they prefer.

That set me wondering if we ever treat God’s gifts that way. Sometimes they come in strange wrappings. Certainly the Babe in Bethlehem didn’t look like a savior. Is there something you yearn for, perhaps have been asking God for? You know just how it ought to look. You’d know the gift-wrap immediately. It might be helpful to ask Our Blessed Mother to help you recognize that gift, however it comes to you. God is looking at you with infinite love, eager to fill your life with his blessings.

Check your relationships with those closest to you. Is new richness being offered there? Look carefully at those whose needs you have recently recognized.

Is that the gift?

Is God calling you to be a channel of his love for them?

Profession of Perpetual Vows SSMN

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Sister Gloria Cabrera, Sister Ines Diaz, and Sister Clara Vo made their canonical transfer of perpetual vows in the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Mary on this day, during a Eucharistic Celebration with Bishop Kevin W. To see Tante Elisabeth, my great aunt, we took two trolleys to reach the Sacred Heart Convent on St. Charles Avenue. A half hour’s walk brought us to Tante Helene’s Good Shepherd Convent. I would go with my mother to visit the Sisters of St. Joseph, my teachers at the academy, when she would help one of them edit the high school newspaper.

I was ten when my family moved to Dallas. We found a house, walking-distance from St.
Edward’s Academy, staffed by the Sisters of St. Mary. In high school, I was inspired by the joy
and simplicity of my teachers. I knew I wanted to offer my life to God as they had done. My
mother had taught me that vocation is a gift to be prayed for, not presumed. After a senior retreat at O.L.V. in Fort Worth, I told the Jesuit retreat master of my desire. As my
father’s work situation was unsteady at the time, the priest advised me to stay home and work.
Three years later, when my father was assured of engagements all year, I was free to follow my dream.

From the day I visited Mother Benita at Our Lady of Victory to ask permission to enter until the present day, I have never doubted that this is where I belong. Five of us entered the same year, one of whom had to leave for family obligations. By the grace of God, our group of four is still intact, sixty years later.

From the beginning I felt very welcome in the Congregation. Life was very structured; every minute of the day was scheduled with prayer, work, study and recreation. I remember the Novitiate days as filled with laughter and fellowship, as well as challenges. After three years, we made vows for a year and dispersed to begin our teaching, living among the professed sisters. Those were the days of classrooms bursting at the seams. My first assignment was in Dickinson, a new school, where I had about fifty students in fourth and fifth grades.

Since then, many things have changed. In the wake of Vatican Council II, the Church has asked
us to re-evaluate every aspect of our lives in the light of the charism of our founders. As we have done so, and many external things have changed (e.g. habits, kinds of ministry), a number of deep, rock-bottom values continue to anchor our way of life. To name a few,

Jesus Christ is our Model; we are called to share His mission, to announce the Good News of His Father’s love, to work for the establishment of His Kingdom.

Our threefold vows of poverty, chastity and obedience free us to be available for His mission. Prayer is our most important work; only in relationship with God is anything of value.

Living in community is a sign of the unity Jesus desires for all humanity.

Religious life is rooted in tradition but not stuck in the past. It is always new, always evolving, as is every living organism. I look forward to glimpsing (as did Moses) the new things God is preparing for the Church as He invites young people to receive the torch of religious consecration and lead the Church into the Promised Land of tomorrow.
